Thanks for the protection, gotta keep that soul.
As for the real-time W40k mod, it works quite well. take's a little longer to play a battle but it's so much more tactical, you need an extra guy as a referee too. (rules kinda suggest having an extra player to referee anyway) Right so for real time play you both take your turns at the same time, but instead of moving your troops on the table you have a map of the battlefield to draw troop movements on (this was helped massively when we borrowed a couple laptops) and you hand over your moves, in phases to the referee who then plays them all out one phase at a time on the battlefield.
This of course meant that a troop could waste it's shooting phase by nominating a target that moved out of sight, so we decided that troops that don't move fire int eh movement phase instead. Fairly complicated stuff, but it allowed for a much higher levels of tactics to be used such as moving to and from cover and swapping your movement phase to lay down suppression fire. Great stuff.
Just to add a small amount of stress, we timed the turns, after x number of minutes (decided before the game starts) you must stop drawing moves and hand over to the ref for playing. An idea taken from an old favourite of mine Space Hulk.
I haven't tried real-time 40k with the new ruleset, might make for an interesting game, might have to get hold of the new rulebook again and have a go.

*weakening at the loss of his soul* "must. "retrieve"
*selects the biggest of his guns and let half a clip into the container before collapsing*
The container just stands there undamaged
"Murton me and the lads are going to the pub for a few, you coming?"
*Murton springs to life suddenly wide awake and looking well*
Damn straight, you can keep my soul. I wasn't using it anyway.
*hides beer and leaves ensuring none are following*
