say a person had super ridiculous money....or was Bill Gates.

And decided to plop down a sturdy man made island in the middle of the Atlantic.

Can he just claim that its now country that the rest of the world must respect?
I mean it is a land mass, that isn't part of any other country, and he owns it wholly.

or is their something else that has to happen before he can do that?
the guy could easily say his government is a dictatorship. so im not sure if an elaborate functioning government system is needed.

Sealand sounds like it has a really legit case to me.
(even thought their name makes it sound like a theme park)

I think that they could pull it off. but they'd have to force the respect by getting a nuke or something.
According to the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, there is no transitional law and no possibility to consent to the existence of a construction which was previously approved or built by a neighboring state. This means that artificial islands may no longer be constructed and then claimed as sovereign states, or as state territories, for the purposes of extension of an exclusive economic zone or of territorial waters.
I'm not sure I really even understand that.

but, if its a No...

My next question is. "Can it be done in space?"

Do private space stations even exist yet?

So far space is unclaimed territory with no governing laws except for a few UN treaties over the space programs, satellites, etc.. but until we get more than just a foot up there, they're not worried about space territories.
