... they dont fuck this up! Most of all u guys must know the story behind the phantom ... this is pretty much like it. Games on demandm no matter what u run. The most important thing is ur broadband connection. All work is done on the server side ... i would really like to see there servers and there backbone connection. They got a box which u can stick in to ur tv and they said if u had a 5 Megabit connection ... u get HD play 720p Which pretty much all games are at. Some are higher but i think i can count them on my 1 hand and there all PS3. Tbh i think alot of the 360 games are running at less. But if u dont have a 5 megabit connection it will start makin ur rez smaller till i hit 1.5 megabit and thats SD. So no more need to have a shit hot pc, just hook this up.

Think its the way to go ... the future?

I dunno... I suppose it is a logical progression and it is very cool but it just doesn't sit right with me. Can't put my finger on it. Maybe I'm just being stubborn. :P

I don't know how this could possibly scale though. In my experience, even on a really good connection, it's practically impossible to get the kind of speeds necessary for realtime 720p from a single server. Yeah, you might be able to squeeze out that much while torrenting but that's a combination of many slower but simultaneous transfers. With that in mind, I don't know how these guys could possibly afford this kind of bandwidth.

I guess that says something about why I don't like it actually. It's an inefficient waste of bandwidth! It's the same reason why I'm not a big supporter of using the Internet as a total replacement for the traditional methods of TV delivery. If the flow of information only needs to go one way, use the airwaves instead. That way, you only need to send out the data once for everybody and not once for each individual. Yeah, this gaming thing is two-way, but it's still bogging down the net in a way that isn't really necessary.

This is a horrible idea at the moment and it won't work here for a long time.

This serviuce is all about the moeny, listen very carefully and you can hear the premium charges for better graphics, or no waiting times, appearing out of thin air.

I'll stick to playing on my PC.

I don't see this working for several reasons.
but the primary reason, (aside form the technical ones that I think everyone is trying to wrap their head around and going "wtf?") is....

I don't think the consumer is ready to ditch the concept of a console.

and something like this pretty much eliminates the whole idea of a console.
it comes bearing resemblance to one, but its really only a service.....like cable TV.

also I doubt anyone would like the model that would probably follow...
subscribing (monthly fees) to game network 'channels'

I think while people really do like the idea of products like this. people like the idea of ownership and having something physical even more.

People are still going to buy physical media no matter what, because it feels 'real'
theirs all kinds of music formats and ways to listen to music now. but people still buy CDs.

I don't think you can tell any gamer, that they're not going to own any physical thing at all, and have them be perfectly OK with that.

A forum I frequent is littered with utter retards ^ (funny that, most are)

But these are special retards. They think Steam, by Valve, is the best thing since sliced bread. Nothing worse than a Steam fanboy, because Steam and the whole idea is a stonking great piece of shit.

As a consumer I'm not too fond of steam either.
I liked buying a game installing and playing it within the hour.
I think the last hing i bought that used steam took me like a day and a half to get all setup before I actually got to play it.

I think services like steam are only goof for the consumer if the games they offer are small and casual.
Like Gametap & XBLA

When you try and pump multiple gigs worth of data over those services, its not convenient anymore...its inconvenient.

However, if you look at steam from a developer point of view...
its excellent, but you have to be a developer to really appreciate all it does.
All the headache it saves the developer is essentially passed on to the consumer.
