Just had a phone call, and I might have a lot of free time over the next 2 weeks or so.
So I decided to go heavier on this project.

I know nothing of engines...
But I found one I feel comfortable with.

mostly cuzz it seems to work very well with, or almost be built around XSI which is something I've been using for like nearly 3 years now.
It should be easy to get content like levels and characters in to the engine, considering that it looks like it was built specifically to handle xsi info.

as for the language "Lua" I never heard of it....
but they say....
Lua is a language that can be learned quickly by a novice or non-programmer.
We'll See just how true that is.

So for the next 2 weeks i guess i'll make an attempt to learn this "lua" thing.
and complete some of the models and stuff.

oh yeah the engine is called Baja.
http://www.bajaengine.com/

Maybe I'll setup a stand alone website for the project too.

Heh I know of Lua but that's all. If you learn that, that'll be one fairly respectable programming language that you know and I don't! They made a "Lua Player" for the PSP so that people could easily write their own code for it. I did see some snippets and it did look very easy.

they use LUA's in all the MMO's these days for UI and addon scripting, everyone and their mother seems to make them so can't be that hard (lol, famous last words) sounds interesting might look into it, for fun.

yeah I was reading up on it.
lots of MMO's came up.

also Farcry and psychonuats, and stalker.
they use it for more than just gu stuff tho.
apparently farcry uses it for nearly everything.

I don't pretend to understand the mechanics of it but in my mind it's like BBcode, it's just a shorthand way of working it, instead of; img src="blah" it's just img blah /img

EDIT: totally wrong, the explaination of it is pretty confusing, would need to learn it how I always do .. breaking something.

Ive been learning it all morning.
and I think I understand some things.

but I don't have any way of "making it go"
i think i missed something.

got this thing called LuaEdit that putts everything in pretty colors so you know the difference. like dreamweaver does with the html code.

I think I made a function where the player can regen health up to 20 if his health is below 20.
but I've have no way of seeing it works.

ofcourse.... i would have to setup the whole idea of player health to begin with.

but I think i got the general idea...

ive also done the "hello world" thing

anyway, its got me looking at other engines that use lua.
I might still give baja a shot, but i wasnt impressed with any of their tech demos.
one didnt work at all and one was just kinda ugly

Ok I'm pretty much over baja.
havent gotten acces to it yet, the demos wernt too impressive, and i havent see anything outside of those demos that used the engine.

theirs a few other engines out there that are big on lua tho.

problem is I gotta figure with one of them is easiest to work with.

you download these engines packages and then what?
I cant even figure out the first step.

I was expecting it to be like modding, except stipped down to the point of no starter gfx,or preset functions, except for at the very least a camera.

guess I was wrong.
(this is why I'm an artist)

But I'm committed to this project now.
So I'll keep at it.

I got no Sound. Whats this dude saying?

ogre always looks nice

I must of installed and tried out (to the best of my abilites) 20 engines last night.

and looked it ahitloads more.

I was basicly using sourceforge.com is a big list.

I dont have anything to show for it.

so this will have to do.
its nothing really...except a prime example of how shit at environments.
I cant even sketch em.

VIDEO

All thes friggen ingines come so naked.
I need one that will let me focus on building the game rather than building the engine.

argghh!

I coulda lerned more lua with all the time lost.

sounds like you want a sandbox or IDK, start moding rather than building.

doom doors, nice :)

I think so...
Whats the "I" mean?

heres all ive tried so far...

--cube engine 2

it was basicly quake, but made from scratch.
not really a bad thing. However it used Md2 and MD3 model formats as well as bsp level editing.

Im not aware of the process of building md2 and 3 with XSIi....
nor do I actually want to.

these formats dont use skeletal animation at all.

bsp I could deal with, but drives me crazy.

--baja engine
I havent gotten the engine yet

--irrlcht
you download it, and it leaves you to the wind.
lots of other egines use it as a bae tho. maybe one of those will offer a bit more.
thiers also somthing interesting called "irrlua" that goes with it

--lugre
I couldnt actually find the fucking download.

--monster engine
the screen shots look great, but it seems to be
fairly limited. it only runs on nvidia cards.

I also couldnt get 'monkeys in the dark' game to work, but I really didnt try that hard either.

--neoaxis
this looked pretty good and worked smoothly from the demo.
but I didnt know wtf to do with it other wise.
also theirs is absolutly no chance of going commercial unless you pay them.

If i go commercial, and I probably wont. id only charge 5 bucks or less. hardly enough to cover the cost of the engine.

--crystal space / cel
I dont remember...oh yeah...confusing
I had to like compile somthing?

--ogre
wtf do i fucking do?
lots of other engines are using it as a base tho.

--emma

this is one of the ogre based engines...
still not a clue.

--gens2

looked very very nice...but ran terribly as hell.
but very very nice looking.

--maelstrom mge
its windows only..which kinda sucks
but it uses lua
but no clue how to get started.

--other
theirs shit loads of engine that look like
they might be good, however none of them are
ready or even have a download availing yet.

the search continues....

EDIT: Looks like CELstart might be what I'm after.

I'm high on Baja again.

I finally got it.
The version of the tech demo bundled with the engine looks a whole lot better.

it also included the work files used to make the tech demo, and I was able to lead it into XSI with ease.

as soon as i go through the process of getting stuff in, I'll try to get the shitty level with the doom door in.

no sleep tonight.

Edit: Well...
I got something in. a few crates and a floor.

i probably could have gotten more in, but i was just so impatient.

I ran into a few problems, but it was merely with the locations and namings of stuff in the directories. it got confusing.

everything was named "myfirstgame"

im gonna have to carve out my own system for names, and where exactly things need to go.

hopefully i'll be in good condition overf the next few days.
