is there a way to set it so that linear isn't my default way to view threads?

Just click on Standard? It should remember. Standard is the default anyway.

weird it never seems to save that setting for me, and i checked my cookies are fine

Actually if you hover over Standard, I notice the URL says "linear" and the Linear+ link next to it says "linearplus". So I guess Linear IS the default. I don't know which one you want to use instead but it still remembers the setting for me.
