quick question....ww2
anybody know why germany had a presence in africa of the top?
just wondering.
I cant figure it out thru simple logic, (unless the goal was really world domination) and im too lazy to look it up myself.
also....
why jersery?
no offense Chewi, but jersery doesnt seem all the important ffrom a war standpoint.

Ahem that'd be Jersey. I'm not sure. Maybe they thought it was a stepping stone into England but some parts of France are so close to England that you can see it. You can't see England from Jersey. Or maybe it was a psychological thing. A way of poking the British in the ribs. Perhaps they took it because islands make good military bases. The number of turrets and bunkers they set up around the coast, which are still there today, would seem to suggest that.
As for Africa, I'm not sure about that either. I think there was still quite a big colonial presence down there at the time so I guess they wanted to wipe those out as well.
Actually, coming back to the Jersey point, I think I remember now. It was because the Germans believed the English were using it as a secret military base. That wasn't the case though. A few days before the Germans invaded, they bombed a shipment of potatoes, believing them to be weapons.

Sorry, but parts of africa are in fact very fertile, Egypt which is in the north for example is still able to produce quite a lot of food etc.
Africa was often used as a military stopping ground and way station of raw recruits for training for shipped cannon fodder like Australian's, Indian's and Pakistakian's who felt that mother country love.
I don't know why germany was there that much but... Any land in a war is not useless
