Opeth

From those killer tunes that you heard 6 years ago in the back of a mini bus, heading into Utah, or the songs that are on the radio now. This is the place. (No R&B please, because it doesn't exist)

Are absolutely brilliant. I love Blackwater Park (the song) Bleak, all of Still Life (The album)

I have naughty sharing links as well if someone wants them, too :D

Blackwater Park rocks. I bought Damnation yesterday. Very tame by comparison but still quite good. I got it for £5 so I can't complain.

I bought Dream Theater's Metropolis Pt 2: Scenes From a Memory for £5 as well. There's this shop in Dundee called Fopp that has all this really cool stuff for £5!

I want to murder you and your hairy children :(

Scenes from a Memory is standing out as my best album so far. Followed by Images and Words and Awake...Oh and A Change of Seasons.

I just can't pick a clear winner :(

:P

You know, Opeth is so damn confusing. Before I ever heard them, I got the impression from some people that they were heavy and the impression from other people that they weren't. After a while, I eventually heard The Drapery Falls and understood why. It was pretty mixed up. But then the rest of Blackwater Park turned out to be heavier overall than I expected. I bought Damnation, expecting it to be much the same. You'd think so from the title, wouldn't you? I waited for that heavy bit to come... and I waited... and I waited... and it never came. They didn't even break into heavy mode once on that entire album. I bet you anything Deliverance is heavy as fuck. The two of them look like they go together, like some kind of ying and yang thing. I'll have to get it and find out.

The only other Dream Theater album I have is A Change Of Seasons. The live stuff is okay but man, that main track is immense.

Hit the nail right on the head man. Deliverence was released the year before Damnation and you're right, it's heavy as fuck! Then they released Damnation and did the Lamentations Tour. Which they played Deliverence and Damnation in their entirity and then played a collection of their best material. Each date had two halves to the show :D

Good to see there's some fans here. Friends of mine had recommended them to me for awhile now, and I know Mike Portnoy has had nothing but good to say about them for the longest time. So I finally picked up a few CD's probably a few months ago. Ghost Reveries and Deliverance. Ghost Reveries was a good CD to kinda break me in to their style, then I was pretty into Deliverance. After that I picked up Blackwater Park and have barely listened to the other 2 since lol. Just got Orchid not too long ago as well, and that one's good too. Damnation is next on the list.

But seriously, I have nothing but good to say about them. They just have this formula in their writing and playing that's like...magical. They caught on to something that I think a lot of metal bands miss. And that's how closely related metal and classical music are. They sure blur the lines though.

They played at the Download and self proclaimed themselves as "The only progressive death metal band at Download" :D Their set lasted 40 minutes and they managed 4 songs :E

You guys should try out Porcupine tree.

Not death-prog but good ^^;; I think they were support band for Opeth during one tour. @_#

Also Ayreon.. I'm sure the singer from Opeth and Dream Theater are on the latest Ayreon Album "The Human Equation"

I got into them first actually though I still only have Signify (with Insignificance!) and In Absentia. Both are absolutely fantastic albums. Signify has to be one of my favourite albums ever.

Porcupine Tree, Opeth and Dream Theater all have some loose connections. Steve Wilson, Porcupine Tree's main man, produced several of Opeth's albums. Steve Wilson and a couple of the Dream Theater guys are also involved in a side-project band called OSI. That band has released two albums. I have the first one and it's pretty good.

Oooh you made me realise who Liquid Tension Experiment actually are! I didn't know! I have one song (which I will play now) purely because of its name - Chewbacca. I was using Kazaa one day (back when I used to do such things) and decided to see whether there were any songs with Chewbacca in the name. It's a very strange name for a song but I believe they chose it because it briefly features some Chewbacca samples. I should have guessed it came from Dream Theater because it sounds a lot like them but I haven't listened to it in ages and back when I got it, I'd never even heard of them.
