ACTUALLY I tried to sort it out ages ago, it was Matalan's fault because they FORGOT to tell Marna that she'd got her days off.
I don't care, I have no intention of driving.

to give an answer to the original question of this thread, the reason the nazis were even in north africa to begin with was that germany was reinforcing their italian allies due to being defeated by the british in eastern libya. they actually lost somewhere around 130 thousand troops to british reinforcements that arrived in december of 1940 over the course of a two month campaign once they arrived. the other part to germany actually WANTING to go into africa was that they were going to use it as sort of a stepping stone to head into the middle east to cut off the oil fields from falling under anyone else's control so they wouldn't end up running out of gas for their wonderful "tinker toys" they'd revolutionized warfare with. point in fact had they achieved that, the majority of europe would more than likely still be under the nazi jack boot to this day.
so, hopefully that answers the original question to this rather old thread.
