I think that depends on which Monster Manual you're looking in, Will.
And only 24 Balors? Strange... In 3rd there are tens of thousands of them... probably more. Does the Blood War exist in 2nd? The ever-going war between the abyss and the 9 layers of hell, where demons and devils battle across the river styx?

Never played 3rd but I had a bunch of characters in 2nd.
Fighter, lvl 11. Deceased - lost to the undead
Wild Mage, lvl 18. Deceased - departed the mortal plane after a wild surge
Ranger, lvl 19. Retired
I had a few others but they didn't get played too often because of DM issues, so I took upon being a DM myself and never got the chance to make another PC, made a bunch of npcs though, that was fun.
Out of all of my characters I would have to say the Wild Mage was most fun to play because a lot of really wierd shit can happen, one time he sprouted leaves and we had to cast wilt on him to get rid of them. Great stuff.
The most fun playing though in terms of the game was a game I joined online playing in a chat room with a dice rolling proggy on the dm's pc with live feed through the chat to the rest of us. Playing AD&D in a chat room is a lot more fun that you think, espcecially if you have teamspeak running.

now I want a deceased character... none of my characters were cool enough to die...
ricky's did though
the bastard got brought back to life though...
Lennaro is retired at level 8, there just isn't much of a point to having fighters after that point, shit... he's got 100+ HP, and he's only level 8
I do still get pretty fucked up in battles though...
he's not entirely retired, he 's just not a main focus anymore

Well my fighter is still going according to that dm, he's just not mine anymore. He's a npc in another campaign. We failed to kill the undead me in our campaign so he kinda transferred him to another. He's a wraith now if memory serves.
Kinda cool though, I was asked to write a few scripts because a necromancer on that campaign kept casting spells to talk to the undead whenever he found one, talking to the spirit that once held the form and helping them move on, thus freeing them and destroying the undead. Shame it doesn't work on all undead creature, only those once living then killed, DMs ruling.
