Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Post by Mik » Wed Nov 23, 2011 9:53 am

This game is awesome.

The control system is diabolical in places due to it being a console game converted to a PC game instead of the other way around I'm usually not a fan the no class system but you can literally customise everything and leveling anything at all increases your base level. Like I was having a hard time killing something so I leapt up on a ledge and started raining arrows on it, leveled up my archery about 8 times (I'd never used it) and my base level dinged up cause of all my skill ups.

Plus you can be a werewolf, I'm not allowed into Dawnstar anymore cause I went on a 'bit' of a rampage, good times.

if you are into norse-like culture or dragons then I would definatly play it Will. I love both so I cant stop playing. The immersion into the world is amazing and the landscape is beautiful. You cant really go wrong with perks and talents either, you can be a healer who has a shield, blocking and knocking people over with your shield while taking cover to cast, or a sneaky stealth mage! Though I just went for a sword and shield build, i got a little maguc to play with along the way.

I love how its proper free roaming too, none of that dragonage linear shite, you can be as evil or as good as you like and the story will wield around it and make it work.

I should never be allowed a horse, I've killed like 8 of 'em, I dropped a couple of cliffs and I accidentally set fire to the last one and it ran off.

Marna had the same horse in Red Dead for ages. We didn't know it yet but you get an achievement for that. She took it really personally when it got caught in the crossfire and she ragekilled the perpetrators.

I'm not a huge fan of first person shooters masquerading as RPGs.

I also am not a huge fan of killing Dragons.

I mix it up,

I like the blocked shield vision, it's authentic, I always bash after having it up to block, I do the same thing in real life pretty much. Shield combat is underused in most fantasy games, the shield is as much an offensive weapon and it is a defensive one. Though no strikes with shield count as legit hits, I use them to off balance the other person and to create openings.

Best thing in 'proper' combat is to hold the shield close to you, wait till the opponent is about about to land their strike, then jut out the shield catching the weapon half way through it's swing, then push away to the left or right, opens up their whole torso if you do it right/ fast enough.

I keep trying a similar move in Skyrim, with mixed results, if you bash as they are doing a power attack, it interrupts or 'stuns' them for a few seconds, but on more normal attacks if you do it late, the animation continues anyway and you take damage. Also blocking alone doesn't help a lot against large attacks, giants for example will happily one hit you, shield up or down.

That said I have a strategy for giants and I've been killing them regularly since level 10 or so.

Nice post, still learning about shield mechanics in the game, I always take shield and axe/sword over two hander in most fantasy games, I love the idea of using a shield like a weapon too though I've just been bashing to knock things back and interrupt casters, I'm didnt know about knocking away power attacks, does it need to be a power bash or does a normal bash work as well? Haven't fought any giants yet.

I'd like to play first person more but I'm still adjusting to that sort of thing in fantasy bases games with melee combat, I usually go first person if I'm using a bow, are you playing on PC or console?

Same on the bow, can't see what the fuck I'm aiming at otherwise.

I'm on PC.

It works on normal attacks sometimes, like I said, mixed results, seems to depend entirely on the timing, too late or early seems to have no effect. Plus it eats the stamina quite quickly, so I tend to capitalise on doing as much damage as quickly as possible. I only use a sword and have sword specialisation for crits.

Finally loaded it up out of boredom... killed my first giant at level 1... didn't even level up...

This game is bullshit.

You don't get any level ups from killing anything.

There is no per mob xp, I think it's all use based, the more you use something (successfully) the more it levels.
