I'm hearing that this game could dethrone or atleast match WoW.

And I have to admit that even I'm interested in it. and Ive never been interested in WoW and I'm not one of those nutty for Star Wars guys.

but I generally dont do MMORPGS (cuzz it seems like developers refuse to do them properly!)
so i'll still probably not play it.
but what does everyone else think about it?

I avoid MMORPGs because I want a life. It doesn't seem like you can just play them casually because then you'd just suck. Most players are always going to be way better than you. No doubt, players of a Star Wars MMORPG would be even more obsessive.

hence..."cuzz it seems like developers refuse to do them properly!"

I think the ideal MMORPG for me would pretty much have to be a game where you didnt really have base stats.
their would be no difference between a lv.60 character and a lv.1 character.

and therein lies the problem...
If it doesnt have basic character stats, is it really an RPG?

I must admit that I've never really thought about it before but levelling does really distort things. A player should be stronger simply because they have improved their skills over their time, not because they've miraculously quadrapuled their strength.

I'm lookin forward to it, all the dialogue is spoken too which sounds fun. Galaxies was good till they changed it :( I kinda do hope it kicks wow of its high horse. The game is so out of date these days. They said they go free to play if theres a mmo to match them.

Bascially, this will get mad box sales.

The thing with MMO's is, they are fairly scalable, I mean you can keep a game going for fucking ever, Sony have proved that you don't need a huge sub base to keep a game going. Everquest 1 and 2, Vanguard and a few others are just sitting on their servers pulling around 50-100k subs at best (between them). With the Station account you can log on any of them and Sony don't really care.

Wow is a behemoth, it's fucking massive in this market, it not only won the 2nd gen MMO battle hands down, it stomped all over the 3rd gen, so much so that 3rd gen was DoA.

All the WoW killers, Age of Conan, Warhammer, Vanguard, Lord of the Rings, Aion etc.

Failed to met expectations, the thing you have to release is that the standard fare for a MMO game is that dev time is around 5 years, at which point, the money is drying up and the investor is getting impatient (Mircosoft dropped an estimated $60mil into Vanguard). So it's been acceptable to release a game that is unfinished.

Everquest 1 was buggy as fuck when it first released, lacked content, it was the exceptionally user unfriendly to the point of being unplayable but none of this mattered. There was virtually no other game to combat it, you put up with it because there was no alternative.

WoW, was released with almost no end game at all, they added as a afterthought, servers crashed constantly, Everquest 2 had memory leaks so bad they had to take the servers offline for about an hour every day just to try and manage the problem, this went on for about 6 months, if I recall. People moaned but there really wasn't a viable alternative bar Eq1/DaoC which was stable but old as fuck at that point.

Wow has not only raised the bar (Success before WoW was 200k subs, 500k subs was market leader, Post Wow 500k subs or slow death, 1mil subs sucess, 11mil market leader) it added a comfort blanket.

Generally speak most 3rd gen MMO's have decent box sales then large fatality of people after the free month is up, and again 3 months of returning to WoW.

I'm not overly impressed with Star Wars' draw in terms of geek fandom, it hasn't worked for Warhammer or Star Trek so far, hell it didn't even work for star wars the first time around with Galaxies, plus most of the Warhammer team got folded into the this team, doesn't really bred confidence.

So what do you think about APB?

I dont know that much about it.
but it seems fundamentally different, and seems to have the attraction of an entirly different audience than the usual.

I was talking about it the other day. But I only saw an exclusive preview of it two years ago. I imagine it's changed a fair bit since then. It looked good but probably not for me.

I read a lot of forums, one in particular that is pretty jaded about mmo's in general, I've been reading their comments they seem to be interested in it but think it wary considering the amount of Fail in current developers
