Thats such an out of the blue announcement.

(they announced it today)

as much as i Like Doom.

I have to ask...
Why?

Doom 3 did ok. but not nearly as well as anybody had hoped it would.
sure it set standards.

but those standards were met and then soon out matched fairly quickly.
and aside from setting the mark, it really didn't do much else.

honestly, compared to the feel and pace of doom1&2 doom3 put a giant question mark over peoples head. it was good, sure. but did it really follow suit?

the monsters had all been redesigned and lots of things were familiar...
but was it a Doom game, or was it more of an homage to a doom game?

I just dont think doom4 is a good idea.
hopefully they prove me wrong in the future.

but I dont think its a good idea to continue from what doom3 was.
and better idea might be to try the 'idea' doom3 over again and just call it doom4 for the sake of naming.
but even that doesn't sounds too appealing.

Im sure the game will set more graphical and technical standards.
but I look at doom3 as proof that doing that is just not enough.

Hmm that WAS out of the blue. I only played the demo of Doom 3 and it was good but I know what you mean. I'd say Serious Sam is closer to the originals.

I rather liked Doom 3. Don't judge it on games that improved on it after it. The fact that when it came out it was pretty damn good should be enough. There are so many mediocre games that come out which get away with using the exact same systems from years before, in fact the first person shooter genre is saturated with them.

even if I discount the games that followed it. Im still not quite sure it fit in right with the rest of the series.

it may be that so much of the earlier games had memorable things about them.
and doom3 had so much forgettable, run of the mill, things about it.

like music and level design.
I dont remember if 3 even had music.
