Yeah, so here's the deal. My "new" laptop is actually an old laptop I got for free. I carry it with me to work so i can tinker online and have a little fun. For games... well the 3d card sucks balls... and quite well I might add, so I had to dust off some games on my game shelf that haven't been touched in years... and I'm finding after the break that I'm still able to enjoy them. Presently I've got Diablo2 LoD xp, Starcraft, Red alert 2, Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom, and Space Colony.
Can anyone else think of some old school non 3d games that will both run on win XP (sorry Jim) and are still fun to play?

I think that's a bit older than he had in mind. I have Commander Keen 1, 3, 4 and 7 if you're interested though. I actually finished 7 once.
That sounds like you're looking at games circa 2000. 3D cards were fairly common by then but laptops were pretty still a fair way behind. Any idea what the specs are?
I've been playing Lemmings 2 a lot. It's an oldie but a goldie and I was never really able to play it back in 1995 when I bought it because it was a total bitch to run. It's still a total bitch to run unless you emulate an entire PC and that needs a lot of CPU power.

128MB is quite a lot for a card, even now, but it probably is dubious like you say. I had a GeForce 3 Ti200 for a while. It only had 32MB but it could do some serious shit, even though the machine was only a P3 750Mhz. My next machine was a P4 2.8Ghz laptop. Sure, you could give the graphics card 128MB but everything ran like shit. My old machine walked all over it. I often referred to it as the disease that was crippling my otherwise awesome laptop. I'm on a desktop again now with a similar spec. The built-in graphics card is supposed to suck but it's still way better than the disease.
Worms, Theme Hospital, Abe's Oddysee + Exoddus?
This graphics card is newish GeForce 6200 128mb and plays rather nicely.
