How can this game have been out for about 3 years and still be top dog of FPS?

I've played Doom 3 on the Pc. Yep, great graphics, lacking gameplay.

I've played and now own Quake 4, great graphics, the exact same lacking gameplay as Doom 3.

Half Life 2 should run on my machine, but doesn't. Looks good, can't pass judgement.

Far Cry is sexual.

When I first played it I spent a good 10 minutes staring at the water :(

I have it on the easiest setting and I'm still stuck. The guns are pretty good. Shooting people with sniper rifles that make them doo backflips is great! Great I tell you!

everything about far cry crysis crytek or whatever you wana call it has been about graphics since day one.

without graphics I dont think it has much to stand on.

I think we're at a point were FPS games should be designed with the shittiest temp graphics ever.

from there, you should try to make the game actually fun.

and then toss on the killer polygons and shit.

however trying to make a Fun FPS game seems almost like a contradiction.
theyre all pretty much the same.

Clearly you've not sat down and been able to play this game on your own, then. It does have very nice looking graphics. But it also has some brilliant physics and some intuitive AI.

I can't understand how you gauge fun. But I'm having fun with this.

The AI is fantastic. They don't just run at a wall until I shoot them. They actively search for me. They can be fooled, too. If you take a shot at someone from far away and they cannot hear the shot or see you, they go frantic and shoot anything that moves, including each other.

The physics is quite something. Barrells go flying when they're near explosions. Make sure they don't hit you, though. You can roll them down hills. Move a crate with you for cover. I've already mentioned back-flipping mercenaries with the sniper rifle. How about hiding with my back behind an old WW2 gun emplacement and lobbing a grenade over, then watching the bodies fly over my head and down the side of the cliff into the water? Fun in any language is that. My only qualm is with the water and barrels. When the barrells end up in the water ( and believe me, they will) they don't float or "go with the flow" or in other words, the tide has no effect on them, you'd expect them to end up on shore eventually. But that's nothing.

Err, so yeah. Graphics make this game look pretty. But even on the lower settings the game is still great to play. Much more interesting than Doom3 and Quake 4, which are just pretty graphics with shitty gameplay.

Also, Crysis is a different game entirely and so far the X-Box version of Far Cry is lacking entirely.

EDIT:

That's not to say that Quake 1, Duke Nukem 3D, Doom 1 and 2, Hexen and Rise of the Triads weren't great games. I remember stinalling games with floppy disks, still.

EDIT2:

I have a version of Duke Nukem 3D that is actually in 3D somewhere, too.

I have played it.

It was the first engine we took into consideration.
we ditched the idea prety early on tho. I dont even remember why, it was so long ago.

theirs lots of fun in physics, but as more and more games include it. physics isnt even a draw anymore.

I would guage fun no a level that I'm not sure your standed FPS game can reach without extending itself into a whole other genre in some way.
as far as AI I'm looking toward Bioshick
thats doing things with AI that probably should have been done years go.

in most FPS games the AI is dependant on the player.
in bio shock its almost like you dont even matter.

Well, eitherway, I'm loving this game, so far. I'm usually way way waaaay behind on hypes. I think I prefer it this way, then I'm not caught up with retards.

Links for Bioshock?

Fear is freaking awesome, but Joe already knows i love it. The grenades are SICK.

Also, HL2 was great, not for the physics alone, but for the way it used them. In most FPS games, they were just a decoration. HL2 actually makes you USE them. Tough to explain, just play the game.

You know what?

Cant we ever just get a game thats First Person and leaves the shooting bit out?

as im thinking about this. why dont we leave out all "attacks" of any sort done in the traditional form.

and for fucking once. lets control a whole hand and its movements and be able to manipulate things.

(the other hand would probably have to be ai)

anyway. Id like to get to that level.
and if a player wants to pick up a gun from there fine.

cuzz atleast he has the option or ability to point it at himself, throw it, hold it upside down or load it with cheese.

Odds are I'll be waiting on that game for ever.

HL2 made me a sad panda, it was beautiful, it felt just like HL1 but good christ was it dull, it lacked the suspense and shock factor of the original, also the story sucked.
