Hehe.

I suppose that's cool, but i'd never use it.

I'm waiting for something i desperately want on the PS3 to come out before i even think about it. I just can't justify spending $1000 on a consol.

Of course, I knew that already. It's cool but I'm a bit dubious about the PS3-specific distro Yellow Dog are putting together. This may not be true but I heard they are using E17 for the desktop. E17 is very cool but still very experimental. The developers themselves regard it as "alpha" software but it's not quite as unstable as most alpha software. As for Gentoo, I've seen from the dev blogs that work is already underway to support it. I'll keep working on the PS2 though. :P

I still don't know why the fuck you would want to do it.

I'm working on the PS2 purely for the technical challenge now. I'm still quite a long way from being a real kernel and toolchain hacker but doing this is bringing me a little closer to the gods. I've learnt a lot already.

Pretty much the idea is to let any distro go on there, James. Like, not a PS3 specific one.

And the point is for linux geeks, if you spend £500 ona console like this, why not whip linux on there and use it as a PC, too?

Yeah I know, but Yellow Dog is preparing a specific one since they are the main Linux distro guys for the PPC architecture, which is what the PS3 falls under. The others may not include support for the PS3 hardware in their installers and default installations, meaning that they wouldn't simply work out of the box. I imagine Yellow Dog may also make it less painful to use on a TV.

True true.

I just think Sony doing this is a step forward for consoles.

First ever attempt at installing Gentoo by a Gentoo developer. Nearly there!

It stands for PowerPC. Not too exciting really.

It's funny to think though, that potentially, the same executable file could be run on a PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, middle-age Mac and modern Amiga if they were all running the same OS such as Linux.

It isn't apart from the homebrew factor, which is good. But I find it interesting anyway. :P
