the light on the left turns amber when it's charging, turns off when it's fully charged. It's green when you are playing, slowly turns on and off when the game is suspended (anythime you close the lid) and does a quick double blink when it's using wi-fi either to find another unit or go online. Also, the right light will turn red if your battery is low.

i'm surprised your manual isn't in english as well, mine has like 5 different languages in it.

The prospect of blinking lights makes me want one now.

Well, considering 99% of people in Japan tend to be Japanese from birth, it probably wouldn't be cost effective to print extra pages in English for the foreigners that speak English. They want everybody to speak Japanese fluently!

I know i'm late and i don't know if you worked it out but to change the language of the startup menu do as follows

(i'm assuming the startup is fairly the same to the DS and DS Lite.)
Click on small DS icon on bottom of touch screen.
Select the Wrench option (it's the pink one on mine)
You should see a Globe(ie the world, not the lightbulb one) like icon above the wrench with the GBA Icon next to it and the arrow one above it with the rectangle. Click on the Globe and you should have the screen pop up with the tiles for English, french, italian, dutch (?), Spanish and Japanese. Press A to confirm and your all done.
Of course being the asian model you might have different languages but i'm sure English will be there.

and Mik, they are developing a Linux thing for the DS at the moment it was mentioned in Wiki. But James has another fancy smancy tool he would prefer.

I have gotten up to 96 Stars in the Japanese version of Mario 64 DS. Pretty good considering I'm doing this all from memory and with the Japanese skill I already have. I also bought Metroid Prime: Hunters while I was in the USA (among a few other GBA games).

Speaking of which, I noticed that the battery life seemed to last a little bit longer while I was playing GBA games. Am I just imagining things or does that seem right? I'm also wondering if there's been research out there concerning just how long the battery life of a DS Lite is on each of the 4 settings of brightness (and does it also depend on how much processing power a game needs too or is that pretty streamlined?)

Just wondering if we have and DS prodigies here.

lowest battery setting lasts 15-19 hours, highest lasts 5-8. It definatly lasts longer playing advance games since it uses only half of it's energy (only one backlight, and one screen)

I was going with the one screen one light thing.

But I have an old shoddy ds ;) so who knows.

I wonder if the preference of top or bottom screen makes a difference?

Sweet. I must have played the system for at least 8 hours long on my flight from Detroit to Nagoya yesterday ... thank god that thing didn't die on me. The movies sucked on the flight and they also couldn't get the audio to work the entire time.

princess peach on the outside.
Bowser Koopa on the inside.

so DS plays GBA games?
if so then I may have to get one for the two games you mentioned.

I have them both here on the pc thru emulation and blah.
but honestly you really cant enjoy them unless its the real deal.
so i havent gotten much of anywhere on either.

Marna recently pointed out to me that it does play GBA games. I had forgotten about that. That's what the slot on the bottom is for.
