It wasn't the Black Mages, it was Distant Worlds, an orchestral thing.
Wikipedia actually says 4 was a big hit for all the reasons I said it sucked. Funny. I guess it was groundbreaking at the time but it hasn't aged well. I saw they did a 3D remake but I can't shake the feeling that it's probably a polished turd.

You're talking about a game that is 20 odd years old by now, you can barely grasp what it was like to play at the time, it's not your fault but it's hard to imagine.
My favourite parts of games I've played in the past, simply wouldn't get past beta these days because they would be frustrating to the user, which they were, but I enjoyed it at the time.
I can remember thinking games will never look better than ff8 while playing, now, I can't even play it without spending about 4 hours modding the shit out of it to make it bearable to look at.
