As a recent IE abandoner I'm curious what the rest of you do about popup ads. I finally couldn't stand them anymore. I've heard the Google toolbar does a good job, but that sites are finding ways around it. Also, does anyone use custom HOSTS files or other tricks to kill banners and cookies?

I think using HOSTS will stop the content appearing inside the popups but I don't think it'd kill the popups altogether. I sometimes tinker with HOSTS for other reasons. And for Nik's benefit, the Linux equivalent of that file is /etc/hosts and it works in exactly the same way.

I used a custom HOSTS file I found on the net once, and it stopped certain popups from appearing. I suspect it is because popups are often created using .js files from other servers.

Ah yeah, that's true. Evil Javascript.

And let me take this opportunity to say that Javascript IS NOT Java!

I have MSN pop-up guard, and it's extremely, extremely rare that I will get a pop-up. Most of them are E-bay related ones anyway.

I'm also using Firefox. I haven't seen a popup since I installed it. With the miraculous Adblock extension I'm even visiting places like newgrounds and ezboard without pulling my hair. It seems to render most pages just fine too, and I've only found a few problems.
