I admit, I haven't really looked as deep into it as I should have.

but on the surface it looks like a simple case of genocide and/or land grabbing.

but WHY?

is their some resource there that they're trying to get at?

I haven't seen it on the news lately but yeah, it's mad. I can't think of any good reason but it probably has historical roots.
