To be honest, the goth subculture has or used to be directly related the music the most. The music came before the fashion.
Anybody who says that a certain subculture is a "state of mind" is just a retard who tries too hard to be something they're not. I see it as something where you can relate to people on a more superficial level or something to just have fun with.
